A Mostly Textual Overview of Recycling Used Cheese-wax

[]

My family used to frequently purchase a variety of Gouda cheese which came wrapped in the typical protective red wax. After several weeks of collecting, I was able to possess a quantity sufficient for the creation of a 100% recycled wax candle. The basic process needs no pictures:

  1. Obtain a metal container (as shown in the picture), one with a sufficiently high melting point to allow stovetop operation.
  2. Fill a pot with water so it covers a reasonable amount of the outside of the aforementioned metal container. Place the pot on a stove and let the water boil.
  3. Place the pieces of wax in the container and allow them to melt. Obtain a wick (I used a piece of string) and place it in the wax. Remove the container from the stove and allow it to cool while holding the wick steady.
  4. With a knife, skim the surface of the candle and remove impurities.

My candle burned for a minimum of 7 hours and 2 minutes. By that time it was late at night and I extinguished it for sleeping purposes.
