I wouldn't consider it a religion, as it isn't organized, has no doctrine or philosophy aside from not believing in a Creator or deity of any kind... I think atheism is choosing not to have a religion... That's my opinion :-P.

Heh...don't you need to have some form of deity/god in order to be considered a religion?

i always thought a religion is simply defined as a set of beliefs which are used to define certain things by people...

That definition for religion is too broad. That would mean that being an American is a religion, because we believe in our rights to free speech and all that. Atheism is not a religion, mainly because religion requires belief, but belief does not require religion.

It seems like this topic is going to die soon, so here's the violent bitterness you were hoping for in this thread, Yichao:

Why would you expect to find violently bitter posts under this topic anyway?

Perhaps he has an expectation that any conversation having to do with religion will turn extremely violent due to such differing viewpoints...

I guess that's half-true, but with this topic in particular, I think that most everybody is in agreement, Atheists and non-Atheists (lack of a better word) alike.

Most people are kinda atheists now... I mean, who hasn't broken a commandment and said 'Oh screw this, I can't be bothered repenting'? Or is that just me?

That doesn't make a person an Atheist though. That just makes them a hypocrite. I'm not even an Atheist, because Atheists strongly believe that there is no God (or god or gods or goddesses). I don't know what's out there.

Atheism is the belief that there is no god, or denial that god or gods exist, not the strong belief in no god or gods.

Strong belief in no God, belief in no God, they're pretty much the same thing. I guess if somebody is a devout Atheist (oxymoron?) then they strongly believe that there is no God.

I personally do not consider myself an Atheist because I don't believe that there is no God. Nor do I believe that there is a God. I don't know what to believe. I think they call people like me "too lazy to choose."

Webster's New World dictionary:
1. the belief that there is no God, or denial that God or gods exist
2. godlessness

Go to http://www.infidels.org/news/atheism/intro.html for a longer explanation of these terms.

Okay, hold on. A religion:
1 a : the state of a religious <a nun in her 20th year of religion> b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
3 : archaic : scrupulous conformity : CONSCIENTIOUSNESS
4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith

I believe that numbers 3 and 4 thus prove Yichao was correct in assuming that religion does not involve supernatural beliefs. And I stand behind the fact that athiesm is my religion.

I think that religion is supposed to be something spiritual though. I (an agnostic) certainly don't feel spiritual about being agnostic. But that's just for *my* definition of religion.

I've noticed that you guys all argue, mainly strictly to the book. Maybe it's a "smart thing", but I always try to find the connotations, before i find denotations...
To me, God has always been there, but not there. I consider myself aetheist, because I have some sort of feeling about god, but taht feeling is not one of complete nonexistance. It's all about the point of view... I didn't read alot of the entries, b/c I just started... so holla back and tell me wat's going on all ur heads...

I have faith, I don't believe in god...

I remember this poem from John Marsden's the Tomorrow series and I thought it was pretty clever...

Basically it's about this person who's looking down at his/her footprints on the beach and God's are right beside his. But in the really difficult bits, there was only one set of footprints... And he/she asked God why God deserted him/her at the difficult bits. And God's reply was, 'I did not desert you child. Those are my footprints when I carried you'...

Just thought I'd share that... :)

The author of the poem, "Footprints," is unknown. I'm quite familiar with it. "One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking across a beach with the Lord..." You explained it pretty well.

Yeah, I got that poem in an email one time. I think that my religious friends forget that I don't believe in their God sometimes. (That is, they forget sometimes, not that I don't believe sometimes.)

well, replying to the original question: that'll just have to depend on what your definition of a religion is. people get caught up in classifying things under 1 word - it doesn't really matter what it's called, all that matters is what it does. psycho people are obsessed with saying mormons are not christian, and psycho mormons are obsessed with defending themselves as christians. my definition of a christian is one who believes in Christ and all he did for us, and we most certainly do. I don't know why people try to add trinity to the definition of a christian, but fine, go ahead, it's just a word, just as long as you don't use it to mislead people about my beliefs OH WAIT! that's the only reason people say we're not christian-to mislead. People get the craziest ideas. Stuff i've heard about my religion:

"Mormons don't believe in the Bible."
"Mormons jump up and down while they pray."
"Mormonism is a cult" (definition again - purposely misleading)
"Mormons become bees when they die"

and i could add some more, but i'm too lazy
