09-24-05 06:49 Reply | People do have personal dictionaries, as it were. What I think a word means just might be different from what you think it means.
I guess that's something that comes with everyone having a mind and thinking and stuff.
...
Right? |

09-24-05 14:44 Reply | Honestly, if that's the *true* definition of cult, then that definition should bring with it no social stigma (unless you just really hate religion), but usually saying "cult" invokes a particular reaction in people: thoughts of outlandish claims and mass suicide. But then again, considering the idea that some giant invisible magic man who lives in the sky created everything out of nothing, I guess the word "cult" just makes me think of mass suicide. |

09-25-05 01:33 Reply | If you think a word means something different than what the rest of the world thinks it is, then you're wrong. Not my opinion (i like a little individualism) but it's true.. for example: my 8th grade science teacher told us all that latitude was height off the ground, and also thought that altitude was your direction (not from the equator, but just a general cardinal direction). So no matter what she thinks it means, she's still stupid, and now we have a classful of people that are going to be ignorant of the meaning of latitude because of their stupid science teacher. |

Black and white thinking is dangerous. Extremely dangerous. Not allowing for people to have varied definitions of the same thing is what's wrong. |

09-25-05 13:21 Reply | What I'm saying is that the dictionary's definition of a cult that you posted is not accurate for what most people (I assume) think when they hear cult. So it's not me against the world; it's the world against your dictionary. My assumption is that the people who wrote the definition in the dictionary were trying to be as inoffensive as possible. |

09-25-05 16:43 Reply | So you're saying that you want everyone's vocabulary to contain the same words with opposite meanings, so that everytime someone tells you to have a nice day they really mean burn in hell? |

09-25-05 16:46 Reply | Besides, the whole point of me giving that definition was to say "IF" that's the definition, then wouldn't christianity be considered a cult, not WHAT does everyone else think it means. "IF and only IF" |

I know some people where that would apply anyway... |

09-25-05 19:16 Reply | Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying, because I remember saying anything remotely close to that idea many times.
But yes, if that is the definition of a cult, then sure, Christianity (and all other religions) are cults. But I doubt that is the definition because there is a distinction between a religion and a cult, in most peoples' minds. |

09-25-05 21:19 Reply | A cult is simply a religious group that is small enough and weird enough to be ridiculed by all the other religions. Except for Mormonism. Mormonism is not a cult, even though it is ridiculed by all the other religions. |

"CNN (“Sect Leader Is Hunted,” 9 May 2006) — During a report about law enforcement’s crackdown and hunt for Warren Jeffs, leader of a polygamist group, CNN superimposed the face of Jeffs over an image of the Salt Lake Temple. Again, this implies a connection between the two. This is not just careless editing, but highly offensive to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Warren Jeffs is not and never has been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."
