09-12-04 05:56 Reply | It would be the "slang term," I guess you could say, for the religion of the LDS church, officially known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The website is http://www.lds.org/ if you're really curious.
But if you're looking for what it actually is, like teachings and whatever else, then that could take a little while to explain...
I'd love to do it, but I have a headache, so I'm going off to bed. |

09-13-04 03:11 Reply | hey you're right Dexter... a non-mormon would be something like "polygamist devil worshipping cult."..... cause that's what the world tells everyone.
a mormon would define it the way it actually is... which is...
Christian.
Based on the belief that Christ visited the American continent (*gasp* you mean he didn't just teach in the middle east?!), and possibly other places but we only have a record of Christ's church on the American continent - The Book of Mormon.
That's as simple a definition as you can get without starting to confuse people... try mormon.org if you want to learn more. |

09-13-04 03:12 Reply | By the way, we also believe in the Bible. |

09-13-04 13:12 Reply | Book of Mormon? I remember my grandpa talking about that when I was younger. I would go stay the summers with him and then we'd go to church. I remember that he was the Bishop or something...? Is this the same church? |
| Dexter345 677 posts
09-13-04 14:22 Reply | And herein lies the trouble... A Mormon would define the religion as a sect of Christianity, while other Christians would have nothing to do with Mormons. Curious, indeed.

09-13-04 15:23 Reply | What's curious is the fact that other Christians are so afraid to place mormons as Christians. We believe in Christ, so why aren't we Christian? According to them, some nonsense about how we don't believe in the trinity, but 3 distinct beings. (wow, how did he descend as a dove if he was being baptised?)
All it is is definitions. It doesn't change the fact that we believe in Christ and that his grace (the atonement) will save us. It's amazing what you will hear about mormons from non-mormons. (some examples: "mormons jump up and down when they pray." "mormons baptize dead bodies." "mormons don't believe in the Bible." "mormons have 17 wives."... it's no wonder you people have such a distorted view of our religion).
Yes, Kaylee, that's probably the same religion. |

Erm... yeah...
Apparently in Southern Baptist churches the LDS are on the list of "Need to be saved". I love it. It's just so funny. |

09-14-04 21:29 Reply | Each sect you come across is going to have its own wierd ideas, including what wierd ideas other sects have.
Except for Methodists, of course. We're normal.
Just remember this: the Muslims also recognize Christ, making Islam more closely related to Christianity than Judeism. Are not Mormons more Christian than the Muslims? Methinks yes. |
| Xathien 1255 posts
09-14-04 23:55 Reply | The difference between the Muslims and true Christians is that Christians believe Jesus was the Son of God. Islam teaches that he was just a good prophet. A horrible liar, but a good prophet nonetheless. :P |

Some mormons at my school said that its the lord talking through the patriarch
have any of you gotten one? |

09-15-04 02:59 Reply | Yes I just got mine last saturday. If you were to get one, it would tell you what your potential is, and what to be careful of, and what your strengths are and stuff like that. |

10-24-04 19:47 Reply | Actually, it's more like having your own universe. Basically, if you do everything needed, you'll be "exalted" or made equal with God. So you'll pretty much be like God. |

10-26-04 00:04 Reply | Actually, this is part of what is called "the Plan of Salvation". Basically, the LDS religion belives that we are children of our Heavenly Father and have the potential to become perfect like Him. Earth is kinda like a testing center where we get bodies (yea!!! its so nice to be able to move matter!) and based on how we use our time, talents, and bodies we are sent to heaven or hell. The LDS religion believes that there are three degrees of Heaven or Glory, and the only way to make it to Hell. or Outer Darkness (OD), is to feel the Holy Ghost, have a true knowlege of Jesus being the Christ, and to rebel agaist it. It ain't easy to get into OD (not that I'd want to...).
If you know any LDS people, commonly called 'mormons,' ask them for a copy of 'The Doctrine and Covenants' (DC). This plan is outlined in great detail in Section 76. Also, Section 89 details the 'Word of Wisdom' which lays down basic guidlines for food and toxicants (ex: no smoking). What the DC is is a compilation of revelations from God the Father to Joseph Smith. You should be able to find all of this out at www.mormon.org
Oh, one more thing. The family unit is definitally important the the 'eternal perspective' (big picture) Families can be 'sealed,' or joined, for eternity (forever), even after death. |

10-26-04 02:52 Reply | That is odd. What else can you tell me? |
| Barrett 385 posts
10-26-04 03:23 Reply | if by 'odd' you mean 'different from everyone else,' then yes, it is quite odd. everyone else's view of the afterlife is incredibly dull... so we go to heaven and sit there?
no.
wouldn't God want us to be accomplishing something? bringing about more good? does He love us?
yes.
so he's given us the potential to be just like him. As for telling you more... there's really too much to tell... mormon.org is a good place, or talk to some mormons in person. the basics are:
we believe in God the father, his son jesus christ, and the holy ghost.
we believe that by good works and through christ's atonement (grace) we are saved.
we believe in the bible.
we also believe that Christ appeared on the American continent, which is told of in the book of mormon. |

10-28-04 23:21 Reply | That's an interesting comment as God told Moses that he would have a peculiar people. Indeed we are. Pull a google on the phrase: "site:www.mormon.org Articles of Faith" That should be a good introduction. (Just copy between the quotes and stick in google, I've tried it:it does work!) |
