04-23-03 00:00 Reply | Hmm...I know it's not as bad as the 60s - we've improved a great deal since then. But perhaps it's the effect of Pride Town or whatever, heh, but I think racism is a problem slightly more common than it may seem...
But I am still not for an Affirmative Action that is based on race. |

Either it's European-American and African-American or beige and brown. |

04-24-03 01:09 Reply | We're just lazy. I don't say that I'm half Asian-American, half European American. I say I'm a happa. Actually I don't usually say anything. But it's easier, and it's not socially unacceptable, to call a person black or white.

04-24-03 01:27 Reply | This is only somewhat related, but I have to mention an excellent example of how silly affirmative action and any racial discrimination is.
There was an episode in Star Trek (original series) called "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield." Two halves of a culture, one dominating the other as slaves, which fought until they destroyed each other.

Look at that link....the cause of all their conflict, slavery, and hate? One race has white on the left and black on the right, and the other has black on the left and white on the right. Captain Kirk didn't understand why that was a big deal, and that's how I feel about skin color...it doesn't make a difference, and it's absolutely dumb to worry about. |

04-24-03 01:39 Reply | I think the ultimate goal is to get to the point where we refer to skin color the same way we refer to hair color or eye color or height. I've already jumped to that point, which sadly gets me in trouble a lot because people think it's offensive sometimes. I have no problem with saying someone has black hops. (i'm on track) - I also have no problem with mentioning out loud that we're gonna lose because most of their track team is black - it's just like saying your basketball team is going to lose because the other is all a foot taller than yours - black people are GENERALLY faster runners and better jumpers, as taller people are generally better at rebounding basketballs and slam dunking. My close mexican friends have no problem with me saying (and joking) "of course you're a good highjumper, how else did you get to the states?" - that's probably going a little too far with not-so-close friends, but i'm careful with that.
anyway... my ramblings get me yelled at too often so i'll stop there. |

04-24-03 02:25 Reply | Hey, I agree with you for once, Barrett. That's what's great about this forum. So many different topics, so many different opinions. I make Mexican jokes to my friend Erik (crossing the border, stealing stuff...) and Asian jokes to my friend Ronnie (smelling bad, having bitchy women...). Stereotypes are fun. Now don't get me wrong, it's all in jest. I treat everybody as an equal, except for those damn dirty Irish.

04-24-03 04:21 Reply | yeah, i think we agree with the war as well - not sure, though. And now i don't think there's much disagreement in the religion one - you know that there's many many possibilities there, and i'm guessing you consider my beliefs a small possibility as well.
and yes, my history teacher last year was irish, and my history teacher this year is irish - both love the irish, although the one this year makes fun of them a lot more (both of them make the drunken jokes, but the one last year thought it was a good thing) |

04-24-03 05:02 Reply | Why should we earn more though? I know many of us do for the same job but why should that be the case? What do you mean we have to support 4 people? They do too! If the woman's (wife) earing money, she's not keeping to herself is she... she has to give it to her family too... |

02-07-04 09:17 Reply | affirmative action for the most part is a euphimism for reverse discrimination.
definitions:
discrimination: where the majority is unfairly biased against a minority
reverse discrimination: just the opposite (minority oppressing majority)
P.S. These are my definitions, though they probably hit pretty close |
