Windows Programs

  • Throttle (by Kirk Meyer) - Throttle is a nifty, compact Windows 2000/XP program that controls the clock throttling features of your Pentium 4 or Pentium M processor. It makes use of the software controlled clock modulation feature described in section 13.4.3 of the IA-32 Intel Architecture Software Developer's Manual Volume 3A. To use, first install the required ia32.sys driver (local copy). Running throttle.exe with no arguments will show the current throttle. Throttle.exe <value> where value is from 1 to 8 will adjust the duty cycle to value/8, i.e. throttle 4 runs your CPU at 4/8 = half speed. To return to full speed, do "throttle 8". Adding a second argument will suppress throttle's output, which is useful for including it in your startup menu without having a window pop up (example: "throttle 1 0" sets one-eighth speed operation silently).

Windows CE/Portable Programs

  • Midnight Class B - For Windows CE based (ARM and MIPS) handheld PCs running CE 3.0 or higher, this will solve the problem where your unit turns on randomly at midnight.
  • Battery - This program, which ONLY works on the HP 200LX palmtop PC, measures your main and backup battery voltages with great precision. It instantly and succinctly reports the values. Source code (NASM) available.
